Overhead Sewer Systems are used to prevent water from backing up into basement. All the drains in the basement flow to a pump pit where the water and waste is pumped from the pit to the overhead sewer. The overhead sewer pipe is set at a height that that will prevent the city sewer from backing up into the basement.

 Elevated pipes (overhead sewers) are less likely to become clogged with debris or root intrusion compared to underground pipes.
